| 1942 | 5/4 - En route from Calcutta to New Orleans, La. at 3:21 PM, with 7,916 tons ore, rubber, jute and shellac, position 18.25 N, 81.35 W, SE of Grand Cayman, West Indes, steaming at 12 knots, Harold W. Hendrickson Master, the vessel was attacked by U-125 (Folkers). The first torpedo struck at #2 hatch on the starboard side, breaking the surface 20 seconds prior to impact. A second torpedo exploded 20 seconds later, just before striking at #4 hatch; the body of the torpedo landing on deck. The engine watch failed to secure the engines and when the crew of 10 officers and 24 men attempted to launch the lifeboats, the vessel was still making 9 knots. When #4 boat touched the water, it was demolished, dumping 5 men into the sea. U-125 fired a third torpedo to hasten the sinking, which occurred 25 minutes later. The crew managed to launch 1 boat and pick the other survivors from the water. The officers on the U-Boat questioned the survivors, gave them directions to the nearest land and wished them luck. The SS FALCON rescued all hands about 7 hours after the attack, landing them at Cartegena, Colombia. |
